2026 Submission Deadlines: March 2 and September 2
Frequently Asked Questions
APPLICANTS:
Intramural K Award Program applications, such as the K12, KL2, and K38 Programs are not eligible.
Most recent summary is a requirement. If you have submitted a revision and have not received the summary then you are not eligible to apply.
Must be an SPR Active member, SPR Emerging to Established (E2E) member or must have applied for SPR E2E membership by the submission deadline (if the applicant meets the E2E eligibility requirements).
FINALISTS:
In early-mid April or early-mid October (depending on the award period) the top scoring applicants will be invited to submit a full package which should include the entire application of their most recently revised K-award including the introduction section with your response to reviewers. It should be the newest version with a response to the criticism raised during the review process.
If the K has not been resubmitted before the finalist round, the applicant should upload the K as it was submitted in June, and the PI will address the applicant's specific plans on how they will be revising the application.
The Cover Letter should come from the applicant and describe the applicant's current position and how the support will be used for the next 1-2 years.
The Specific plans should include a 1-2 page document describing how the applicant plans to respond to criticisms and revise the K-award application.
Finalists should submit the original Aims page that was scored.
As long as the PDF is not larger than 25 MB, the applicant can upload the entire K, including budget, justification, description of institutional environment, etc.
2026 Awardees are expected to attend the PAS 2027 meeting.
FUNDING:
The fringe benefit that the applicant's institution covers is in addition to their institution's commitment of matching the $40,000.
The $40,000 from SPR will be disbursed in two installments: $20,000 the first year starting on July 1, and the second installment of $20,000 the following year on July 1, dependent on the K not being funded as of June 30th of that year. If funded during the first year, SPR does not require any portion of the initial $20,000 to be refunded.
The $40,000 from SPR and the $40,000 from the recipient's institution must go towards recipient's salary and/or the recipient's research program.
The awardee is typically notified in late-March and with the date of the program being from July 1, 2025 - June 30, 2027.
INSTITUTION:
If recipient were to transfer to another institution during the time period of the award, the award could be transferred to the new institution, provided recipient's new department chair commits to match the remaining funds.
